A man is in custody after police say he shot his own father in the head while they were driving on I-76 near Philadelphia on Tuesday.

The victim, a 42-year-old man from Philadelphia, was driving a 2010 Buick LaCrosse when suddenly the 22-year-old took out a gun and shot his father in the head, according to investigators.

Another family member was also in the car at the time of the shooting, around 5:45 on I-76 westbound at milemarker 332 in West Conshohocken.

Paramedics who were traveling in the area at the time immediately responded. The father was taken to the hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition.

The suspect was taken into custody and transferred to the Pennsylvania State Police Philadelphia Barracks. His weapon was also recovered, officials said. Charges against him are pending.

Westbound lanes on I-76 were closed for several hours as police investigated the shooting. The lanes were eventually reopened.
