Woman Killed by Amtrak Train

An Amtrak train hit and killed a woman on the tracks right under the Ashland Avenue overpass in Glenolden, Delaware County on Thursday morning.

The accident happened around 4:15 a.m. when an Amtrak work train coming up from Washington passed through.

The victim -- who police say was about 40 years old -- was pronounced dead at the scene. Glenolden police say they have tentatively identified her but that information won't be released until they've confirmed it and notified family members.

The train death shut down the SEPTA R2 to Wilmington for a portion of the morning rush and caused delays on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor route.

The county Medical Examiner is investigating to determine the official cause of death.

Last week, a person was hit by a SEPTA train and killed after they fell from the platform onto the track at the Huntington Park Station.

In March a Wilmington fire inspector was killed by an Amtrak train while on duty.

In February, two Delaware County teens killed themselves by stepping in front of an Acela train at the Norwood Station.
