Overbrook School for the Blind Evacuated

Strange odor forces students out of blind school for about an hour

A strange odor forced students to be evacuated from the Overbrook School for the Blind for about an hour Wednesday afternoon.

The evacuation happened at the school at 6333 Malvern Avenue after a worker smelled a nail-polish-like odor, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.

No one was injured, firefighters said.

About 400 students were taken out of the building as firefighters investigated.

Around 5 p.m., authorities gave the all clear after finding no harmful fumes.

A message was posted on the private school's website said that there would be no school Thursday and Friday and the choral concert scheduled for Thursday was also canceled because of a lack of water to several buildings. It's unclear if the water issue is related to the odor.

The school has educated blind children for 178 years, according to their website.
