3 Die When SUV Crashes Into Woods Off New Jersey Turnpike

Slippery conditions and driver error were to blame for a crash along the New Jersey Turnpike southbound Thursday morning that left a man and his cousins dead, investigators said.

The out-of-contol Grand Jeep Cherokee went off the roadway and struck a tree with such force that it killed Segundo Romero, 45, and two of his cousins on impact just a few miles south of Exit 4 (Route 73) in Cherry Hill Township, New Jersey around 7:20 a.m., said police.

"He [Romero] turned his steering wheel hard to the right to avoid the concrete barrier and when he did that, the slick roads just sort of took over," said New Jersey State Police Detective Ed Long.

State police warned motorists to expect delays in the area as they investigated the deadly wreck, which took about three hours.

Long warns drivers, especially during the winter, to slow down when there is any precipitation.

"Just because the speed limit is 65, with conditions like we had this morning, any overcompensation either way could send your car into a spin."
