Historic NJ Theatre Collapses

A historic theatre under renovation collapsed in Millville, N.J. Monday.

The 102-year-old Levoy Theatre on N High Street was undergoing an $8-miilion construction project when the roof fell in around 3:10 p.m. Bricks spilled out of the building and onto the sidewalk and street.

On firefighter on the scene suffered a broken leg, officials said.

It was unclear what caused the roof and walls cave in.

People in a three-block radius of the collapse were evacuated as a precautionary measure as gas to the area was shut off. By mid-evening people on the other side of the block from the Levoy were allowed back into the their homes and businesses but the evacuations continued on the theatre side of the block.

There was no official word on damage to nearby buildings but there appeared to be some brick damage to the exterior of at least one nearby business.

The theater was being renovated in hopes to reopen this summer.
