“Christmas” Returns to Philadelphia

Mayor Michael Nutter announced on Wednesday that the Christmas Village sign will go back up in Dilworth Plaza on Thursday.

"I'm pleased to let you know that Christmas Village is back," said Nutter. "The sign will be back tomorrow."

He made the announcement inside City Hall around 6:40 p.m.

The announcement comes in the aftermath of great public outcry.

On Monday, officials removed the word "Christmas" from the Christmas Village sign outside of Dilworth Plaza at City Hall.

Managing Director Rich Negrin said that they had received numerous complaints from public employees and citizens about the word "Christmas."

Those complaints were shared with the German owner of Christmas Village, Thomas Bauer.

They planned on changing the sign to “Holiday Village.” Public reaction to the name change was largely negative however.

Mayor Nutter claims that it was Bauer who made the decision to alter the sign, not the city.

"We did not physically, or in any other way, shape or form take the sign down," said Nutter. "That was his choice."
