Bucks County Worker Falls Into Sugar Vat, Dies

Officials believe he fell off a catwalk into the vat

A man died today after falling into a vat at a sugar processing plant in Bucks County.

It happened at the CSC Sugar plant on Roebling Road in Falls Township. Janio Salinas Zalerda, 50, of Edgewater, N.J. died after he fell from above into a sugar hopper, according to the county coroner's office.

Police sources say the victim was reported missing for several hours. After searching for an hour, co-workers found his body inside a sugar vat, according to police sources.

Officials believe he fell off a catwalk into the vat.

The plant suspended all operations as authorities continued to investigate the incident into the early evening. They tell NBC10 that they have no reason to believe foul play was involved and suspect that the man's death was an accident.

CSC Sugar had six serious violations and four other violations back in 2010 when they were located in Swedesboro, N.J., according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

NBC10 tried to call the company to find out more about the violations but they haven't returned our phone calls.
