Truck Crashes Near Eakins Oval, Closes MLK Drive

Driver misses posted signs before overturning under an overpass

A truck driver who apparently missed posted signs hit an overpass and overturned causing the closure of the entrance to the Martin Luther King Drive early Wednesday.

Around 3:45 a.m. the truck hauling groceries crashed underneath the Spring Garden Street Bridge outbound near the Eakins Oval, a.k.a the Art Museum Circle, according to authorities.

Three people were in the cab of the truck when it overturned. Two of them suffered minor injuries but nobody was hospitalized after the wreck, firefighters said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation however there is a sign posted leading onto MLK Drive that says no trucks or buses.

The truck's driver told NBC10's Byron Scott that he was on his way back to Scranton and didn't see the signs when he struck the overpass.

It took nearly two and half hours to upright the truck. MLK Drive remained closed inbound at Sweetbriar Drive and outbound in Center City as of 6:15 a.m.

The truck was removed, the roadway cleaned and MLK Drive was reopened around 6:45 a.m.

The crash didn't close Eakins Oval.
