Odor Causes Hazmat Situation in University City

Philadelphia firefighters rushed to a hazmat situation in University City Tuesday morning.

The incident began when workers inside the Wistar Institute at 36th and Spruce Streets reported a strange odor in the basement around 8 a.m.

Firefighters said they responded to the scene to try and determine the cause of the odor.

Firefighters said some people were exposed to the bad smell. Medics treated one worker for eye irritation.

Firefighters said the building wasn't evacuated as the investigation continued. The situation was put under control in about 75 minutes.

Authorities warned of possible traffic troubles along Spruce Street and in the surrounding areas.
