Gas Leak Causes Evacuation at Delaware Elementary School

The smell of gas caused the evacuation of a Delaware elementary school Wednesday morning.

The leak occurred inside David W. Harlan Elementary School along Jefferson Street in Wilmington around 8:20.

The Brandywine School District posted that firefighters responded to "a suspicious" gas odor.

"All Harlan students have been safely evacuated to P.S. DuPont temporarily. As soon as the WFD gives us an all-clear, Harlan students will return to the building."

Firefighters cleared in total 395 students from the school and vented the building.

Delmarva Power - Gas Division crews responded to the scene to try and figure out where the leak came from.

Firefighters alerted parents that they could pick up their children at DuPont school.
