A man is in critical condition after a freight train slammed into a tractor trailer in Newark, Delaware.

A man is fighting for his life after a freight train slammed into a tractor trailer in Newark, Delaware.

Investigators say the driver of the tractor trailer, 42-year-old Joseph Mounts of Felton, was making a delivery at a restaurant on West Main Street just east of the rail crossing shortly before 2 p.m. The vehicle was parked on the sidewalk east of the crossing. Police say Felton entered the tractor trailer after making the delivery when the train signal crossings activated as a westbound CSX freight train approached.

The crossing arms lowered onto the trailer as Felton tried to drive the truck forward and away from the crossing, according to investigators. As the tractor entered onto the railroad tracks, it was struck on the passenger side by the front of the freight train.

Felton was trapped inside his vehicle for about 20 minutes before rescue crews were able to get him out. He was taken to Christiana Hospital for head and internal injuries. He is currently in critical condition.

The roadway and rail crossing were closed for a few hours before they were opened back up to traffic around 5:30 p.m. Motorists are urged to use caution as they pass through the area. CSX personnel continue to make repairs to a crossing signal damaged in the accident.

Police continue to investigate the collision. If you have any information, please call Corporal Thomas Smith at 302-666-7110 ext. 450.
