Former Philly Cop Dies in Fire

One person is dead and five others injured after a fire broke out Tuesday night at a home in the Northern Liberties section of the city.

The blaze began at 11:30 p.m. on N 5th Street. Firefighters arrived at the scene after hearing reports of a person trapped inside the house.

After firefighters controlled the blaze around 12:16 a.m., they found the body of 70-year-old Joseph Bell inside the home. Investigators say he was a retired Philadelphia police officer.

Bell's wife made it out of the home. But the couple's nephew wasn't able to get his uncle out from inside the home and had to be rescued by firefighters.

Three firefighters were taken to the hospital where they were treated for burn injuries and expected to be OK.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.

The home had a working smoke detector, investigators said.
