City Official Hit By Truck in Center City

A high-ranking city official was struck by a pickup truck at 18th and Chestnut Streets around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Police wouldn’t identify the victim except to say she was a “female city official.”

But sources told NBCPhiladelphia.com that an assistant deputy mayor, Debrah Merlin, was injured after being hit by the work truck. The 52-year-old was in critical condition at Hahnemann Hospital, sources said.

Merlin is the assistant deputy mayor for the Mayor’s Commission on Aging.

Mayor Michael Nutter’s office had yet to release any information on the crash.

The driver of the truck, which was from a Lumberton, N.J. company, stopped after the crash and was questioned by police.

He was released and no charges were immediately made against the driver.
