Father Finds Tree-Trimming Son Dead

NJ man dies while removing part of a tree from his property: cops

An 88-year-old father found his 61-year-old son dead after an apparent tree-trimming accident in South Jersey Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey State Police said.

Frank Smith, 61, was on a ladder using a chainsaw to remove part of a tree on the 200 block of Kings Highway in Dennis Township when the limb fell on top of him, police said.

Smith's father came home to find his son lying next to the tree having fallen off the ladder, police on the scene said.

The father called police but it was too late, Smith was already dead, cops said.

It was unclear if Smith suffered a medical event or if the tree limb caused him to fall, police said.

A freshly cut limb, the ladder and the chainsaw were left at the scene.

It wasn't clear why Smith was cutting the tree.
