Ceiling Collapses Pinning Woman Underneath

A woman was hurt Thursday morning when the drop ceiling inside a North Philadelphia beauty store collapsed pinning her underneath the rubble.

The store manager says his wife hurt her leg and was hospitalized after the store ceiling collapsed while she was working alone inside the Erie Discount Health & Beauty Aids store at Broad and Erie Streets.

Yook Hong's wife was at the register while her husband was outside when they heard a "loud boom" as the ceiling fell in. She was pinned under the rubble but was eventually freed and taken to Temple Hospital.

She should be OK, her husband said.

The ceiling apparently collapsed because it's weight was too heavy for the nails holding it in place, officials said.

The store must remain closed until the damage is fixed, according to city inspectors.

Nearby stores weren't damaged and remained open after the collapse.
