A Philadelphia Police officer died after suffering an apparent "massive" heart attack at Philadelphia's Criminal Justice Center Tuesday morning.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said a fellow worker in the courthouse found Officer Douglas Bamberger, a 16-year veteran, unresponsive in the courthouse around 7:30 a.m. and called 9-1-1.
"We do not know how long he was unresponsive," said Ross, who added that Bamberger had gone to the ninth floor shortly before 7 a.m. The officer was assigned to the Court Liaison Unit.
Police, paramedics and other rescue personnel rushed to the CJC at 13th and Filbert streets to help Bamberger, 41. He is survived by his wife and two children.
"People started CPR immediately," said Ross.
Paramedics managed to revive him on the way to Hahnemann Hospital, Ross said. It was believed, initially, that the officer may have suffered a "massive" heart attack, said Ross.
The courthouse continued normal operations Tuesday morning.
