Blown Tire Caused Bolt Bus Crash: Report

State police say a blown tire caused a bus crash on a central New Jersey highway last weekend.

Fourteen people suffered minor injuries, mostly bumps and bruises, in the accident that occurred Saturday afternoon on Interstate 295 in Mercer County.

State police Lt. Steven Jones tells The Times of Trenton that the bus was northbound, near milemarker 59 in Hamilton Township, when the blowout occurred. The driver lost control and the vehicle crashed through a guardrail and slid down an embankment in a wooded area.

The bolt bus had departed from Philadelphia and was headed to New York when the crash occurred. The passengers who were not hospitalized were transferred to a different bus. All of the passengers will receive refunds, according to the company.

Jones said no charges would be filed in the accident.

Last March, a bus carrying 23 players and coaches from the Seton Hill women’s lacrosse team crashed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. During that accident, 30-year-old coach Kristina Quigley, her unborn child and the bus driver, 61-year-old Johnstown resident Anthony Guaetta died in the crash.

Last February, a charter bus carrying passengers from the Philadelphia area struck an overpass on a road in Boston. The bus was carrying 33 students and nine chaperones from the Destined for a Dream Foundation, a non-profit group that helps underprivileged kids. In total, 35 people, including the driver, were hurt.
