Off-Duty Cop Shoots Alleged Bank Robber

Man had what appeared to be an explosive device attached to him, police say

A man allegedly attempting to rob a Berks County bank was shot Monday morning.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. at the M&T Bank on the 800 block of Penn Avenue in Wyomissing, Pa.

The suspect entered the bank with what appeared to be an explosive device attached to himself, according to Wyomissing Police.

Investigators say an off-duty police detective happened to be in the bank at the time and managed to wrestle the suspect to the ground. During the struggle the suspect was shot in the stomach area and had to be hospitalized, police said.

No employees at the bank or customers were hurt, police said.

A robot was on the scene to see if the device was actually explosive but it turned out to not be real, according to authorities.
