Expect Delays After A.C. Expressway Overpass Crash

Dump truck hits overpass sending concrete flying, possibly snarling traffic for weeks

A truck literally crashed into the Atlantic City Expressway Monday afternoon in Hamilton Township, N.J.

A dump truck driving southbound on Route 50 struck an A.C. Expressway overpass near exit 17 around 2:50, according to Hamilton Township Police.

The collision sent pieces of metal and concrete flying down onto Route 50. It caused all but one of the westbound lanes of the A.C. Expressway and the southbound direction of Route 50 to be closed as engineers examined the damage, officials said.

But the exact impact of the wreck became much clearer Tuesday after the South Jersey Transportation Authority said it would take up to two months to fix the damage done after 74-year-old William Miller of Marmona, N.J. allegedly crashed his dump truck into an overpass.

At the time of the wreck the truck's hoist was in the up position, cops said.

The crash left Miller -- who was wearing his seat belt at the time -- hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

It also left Expressway officials scrambling to fix the road that has already been under construction for months as they put in high-speed E-ZPass lanes at the nearby Egg Harbor Toll Plaza.

The tollbooth improvements were set to be finished in time for the Memorial Day weekend but now it looks like even July 4th weekend could be dealing with a traffic headache.

"Motorists should expect and prepare for delays over the next 6 to 8 weeks until repairs are complete," according to a SJTA release.

The Route 50 overpass will be under repair causing the right lane and shoulder of the westbound ACE to be closed, according to officials.

Also southbound Route 50 will remain closed under the bridge. Signs will be posted directing southbound traffic onto one of the northbound lanes, officials said.

The accident remains under investigation and no charges were immediately made.
