On Wednesday, PennDOT announced that motorists may encounter lane closures that lead to heavy delays on I-76 this weekend.

The weekend-long lane closures will occur on both I-76 east and westbound lanes between South Street and 28th Street in Philadelphia.

PennDOT recommends that travelers use SEPTA transit whenever possible.

Concrete resurfacing will occur on eastbound lanes after extreme heat caused a traffic nightmare along the Schuylkill Expressway on June 8.

Temps nearing 100 degrees caused an eastbound lane of I-76 near Grays Ferry Avenue to buckle. The right lane was closed for several hours after a 100-foot length of highway was torn up.

Normal traffic patterns should resume around noon on Sunday.
