Woman Dead, Husband Hurt After Truck Flips Over, Catches Fire on NJ Tpk

Investigators say a tractor trailer flipped over and crashed just north of exit 5 in Burlington Township.

A woman is dead and her husband in the hospital after an accident on the NJ Turnpike.

It happened Wednesday around 2 a.m. under the Oxmead Road overpass on the southside of the Turnpike in Burlington Township.

Investigators say that a 2007 freight line box truck was traveling in the right lane when the driver somehow lost control and struck a guardrail off the right shoulder. The impact caused the truck to go on its right side and strike the overpass. The truck turned over again and caught fire.

The driver, Joseph Gaudio, 67, of North Carolina, managed to escape. His wife, Glenda Gaudio, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene however. Joseph was taken to Mount Holly Hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Oxmead Road was closed between Bromley Boulevard and Burrs Road. While the scene has cleared, crews worked on the guardrail which was damaged in the crash.

NBC10 spoke to one driver who told us the dense fog is making it too dangerous to stay on the road.

"When I was coming up to the light just now, you couldn't see the brake lights on some of the vehicles, so it's dangerous," said the man. "I'm not going to work anymore tonight because I can't see. It's really bad tonight."

Police have not yet confirmed if fog was the cause of the truck crash however. They continue to investigate.
