Worlds Largest Cruise Ship = 11 Love Boats

When it launched, the Titanic was the largest ship afloat. By today’s standard, it would barely qualify as a life boat for Royal Caribbean’s newest monster cruise ship, the Oasis of Seas. Under construction at STX Europe in Turku, Finland, the ship is in the final stages of interior work and will soon hold the bragging rights as the world’s largest cruise ship.

So just how big is it? To give it some perspective, the Titanic weighed in at 46, 328 tons. The Pacific Princess (best known as TV’s “Love Boat”) is a svelte 19,903 tons. The Oasis of the Seas thunders on stage at a hefty 220,000 tons. And that’s before the buffets are on board. It spans 16 decks and carries 5,400 guests in 2,700 staterooms.

The ship’s immense interior is designed around unique “neighborhood” concepts, each with distinct themes. There are seven themes in all including a mini Central Park and Boardwalk. Spacious, urban style two-story lofts offer 545 to 2,069 square feet of space with expansive ocean views. Other amenities include the first amphitheater at sea with the largest freshwater pool on a ship, two rock climbing walls, spa, sports zone, and a unique moving ‘elevator’ bar at sea which will traverse three decks.

“After more than three years of intense planning and collaboration and with 65 percent of the ship already complete, it’s exciting to see Oasis entering its final stages,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The ship will be commanded by William S. Wright who was the start up Captain for Freedom of the Seas, currently the largest ship in the world-- 40 percent smaller than Oasis.

Royal Caribbean is expecting the Oasis to be a big hit and has already started construction on its sister ship, the Allure of the Seas. Oasis will sail in November 2009 from her home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
