Blago Gets Drew's PR Firm, Preps for TV Blitz

Governor does media blitz as Illinois Senate determines his fate

Gov. Rod Blagojevich now shares something in common with Drew Peterson.

The embattled governor has hired the same public relations firm that represents former suburban Chicago police office who is suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Stacy Peterson.

Glen Selig, of Tamp-based Publicity Agency, says Blagojevich is eager to tell his side of the story as the start of the governor's impeachment trial looms.

Blagojevich has hired firm to help him deal with the media on personal matters related to Blagojevich -- not with issues directly related to Illinois state business.

The governor's move comes amid a newly launched media blitz that will include in person Monday appearances on CNN's "Larry King Live," as well as on ABC-TV's "The View" and "Good Morning, America."

After keeping mostly out of the public eye since his arrest last month on federal corruption charges, Blagojevich has given a series
of interviews portraying himself as the victim of vengeful lawmakers and special interests.

The two-term Democrat said Friday he wont' participate in what he described as a "sham" trial. Instead, he called on Chicago newspapers to come to his defense and declare the proceedings unconstitutional.e

In his first extended interview since his Dec. 9 arrest on federal corruption charges, Blagojevich told radio talk show hosts Friday morning that efforts to oust him are really "about raising taxes."

Appearing on the "Don Wade & Roma" show on WLS-AM 890, Blagojevich said, "Pat Quinn has cut a deal with Democratic leaders ... (and) it's all about getting rid of me to raise taxes on people."

Blagojevich said he's certain both income and sales taxes would be increased by May.

The embattled governor did not address any of the specific charges brought against him, but he did apologize for profanity used on wiretap tapes recorded by federal agents.

"If I knew they were listening, I wouldn't have used those words," he said.

NBCChicago.com will offer live video of Gov. Rod Blagojevich's impeachment trial each day beginning Jan. 26.

NBC 5 Chicago will also broadcast the trial on its digital channel "NBC Plus," which can be found on Digital Channel 5.2, Comcast Cable Channel 194, RCN Cable Channel 190 and West Cable Channel 130.
