NYT Ignores Philadelphia Housewife

It's hard to get a spot on the Vows page

Normally, we wouldn't be disturbed over an omission on the New York Times Vows page. Some of us have actually made it there, so who are we to complain?

But Jonathan Segal, a hedge fund vice president whose mom used to teach at John Moffet Elementary School in Philadelphia, might not feel the same. It seems the Gray Lady published a partially edited version of his and Danielle Cohen's wedding announcement on the web today, "full of {cq}'s and desperation over how to describe" the original Mrs. Segal, a housewife.

According to Gawker:

The early version, screenshot by noble comment warrior MockerStalker, includes a paragraph that appears to be a note between the writer and editor fretting over how to identify the groom's mother:

"This WAY too long ago: His mother retired in 1975 as a sixth-grade teacher at the John Moffet Elementary School in Philadelphia. I called the school, and they just laughed about confirming her employment. but son says he can send me her teaching certificate. I don't think we need to go that far."

And they didn't.

"The final edition leaves poor Mrs. Segal out entirely, because if one does not have an easily identifiable job, philanthropic hobby, or tony employer, one does not exist at all to the Vows page," notes Gawker's Maureen O'Connor, adding that she will happily commemorate Mrs. Segal's contribution to raising 28-year-old Jonathan.
