Dr. Sanjay Gupta could soon be making White House calls.

Is it possible Barack Obama's cabinet selection process involves channel surfing?

CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been invited to be the next Surgeon General, according to Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post.

Gupta has reportedly expressed interest in the position and is taking a few days to work out the logistics of a move from Atlanta to Washington. Gupta and Obama initially talked about the opening during a meeting in Chicago last November.

The Michigan native has worked for the White House before, having helped then-first lady Hillary Clinton with speeches and policy issues in the late '90s.

A trained neurosurgeon, Gupta performed brain surgery five times while embedded with Marine doctors in Iraq during the initial 2003 invasion.

He currently serves as host of CNN's "House Calls," files reports for CBS' "The Evening News With Katie Couric" and "60 minutes," writes a column for Time magazine and serves as associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital.

  • Anonymous Thursday, Jan 15 at 9:03 PM FLAG COMMENT I think he's a poor choice. He ignorantly and arrogantly accused Moore of getting it wrong in "Sicko" Then Gupta was proved to be the one who was wrong.... and had to issue an apology. Haven't we had enough of shoot-from-the-lip people who put conservative politics above facts in office?
  • Rich Thursday, Jan 8 at 7:52 PM FLAG COMMENT Gotta agree with Sov. this is Obama's first good pick (he's more than qualified). But Ms. Lewis - on the one hand I see your point about race; but on the other - I don't care what color, race, or species my neuro surgeon is - as long as they're the best...race does not matter
  • Dexter Wednesday, Jan 7 at 3:27 AM FLAG COMMENT Gupta is a great pick.
  • Mr. A Tuesday, Jan 6 at 10:13 PM FLAG COMMENT Most likely Mr. Gupta was first seen through T.V., and no doubt he is qualified for the job and is a good choice, despite the stereotype that all T.V celebrities are fake. The Obama team has made a good choice with Mr. Gupta.
