A spring storm delivered a wintry mix of rain and snow across our area on Monday causing slippery roads and traffic nightmares for drivers.

A driver was seriously injured after he was trapped inside an overturned tractor trailer on I-295 near exit 34A around 9:26 a.m. Investigators say the driver was traveling in the northbound lane, lost control of the truck, and ended up in the southbound lane. The victim was taken to Cooper Medical Center. Debris from the accident hit another vehicle. No word on the driver’s condition. No other injuries have been reported at this time.

Light precipitation continues to fall throughout the region, though most of it is only rain at this point. Some of the rain could turn to light snow late Monday night going into Tuesday morning though it won't be enough to accumulate.

An area of low pressure is moving off shore and taking all the precipitation with it. Road temperatures are around 50 degrees which will prevent any icy spots on the road.

Snow Timeline:

After 8 p.m.  Gusty winds continue, but snow and rain will be tapering

The mix should finally clear out by Tuesday which will be mostly cloudy with highs around the mid-40's. Temperatures will slowly warm up into the weekend which will feel more like Spring, with highs near the mid-50's on Easter Sunday.

The snow has moved out of our area though the rain remains.

A Winter Weather Advisory began in parts of Berks, Lehigh and Northampton Counties, as well as parts of the Poconos at 2 p.m. Monday and should last until 8 a.m. Tuesday. The snow ended for most of the region as of 11 p.m. except in areas far North such as Northampton County and parts of the Poconos.

Sleet mixed with snow hit Lancaster County and Chester County. Meanwhile mostly rain moved into Philadelphia mixed in with a bit of sleet.

Timeline

10 p.m. - 3 a.m. - Rain throughout the region.

Snow Totals

Carbon County: 5.0 inches

Berks County: 3.0 inches

Lehigh County: 2.1 inches

Chester County: 1.3 inches

Philadelphia County: Trace of Snow

While the snow has moved out, there are still some slippery spots on untreated roads North and West of the region though that should change Tuesday morning as temperatures rise.

Another wave of rain will hit the region early Tuesday with a possible wintry mix to the North and West. Things will finally begin to clear Tuesday afternoon just in time for Spring to make its official arrival on Wednesday.

Precipitation has ended in the Lehigh Valley and Allentown area down toward Chester County and Northern Delaware. However, the rain is changing into snow in parts of Philadelphia, Lower Montgomery County, Bucks County and Mercer County. The visibility and temperature have gone down a bit though it's still not cold enough for most of the snow to stick in our area. Still, there could be some snow on grassy surfaces by the time people wake up on Thursday.

The rest of the storm is slowly diminishing though winds are still strong in Southern Jersey and the Delaware Coast. The storm already caused flooding and power outages in those areas and the coast is in for more problems.

"There is still the threat of high tide coming to the shore 3 to 4 Thursday morning," said NBC10 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Schwartz. "Moderate to major coastal flooding will take place."

Glenn also says the Jersey Shore and Delaware Coast are in for more moderate coastal flooding Friday morning.

"People at the shore have a long stretch of problems," he said.

As for the rest of the area, more snow may develop Thursday night into Friday morning mainly North and East of Philadelphia, especially Bucks County and Mercer County. The Nor'Easter will join up with a new upper air storm which will push the snow and rain back from New England into our area.

Things will finally improve for the area Friday afternoon. Things will be beautiful during the weekend with sunshine and temperatures rising into the 50's.

You have to enjoy suspense to be a meteorologist-at least the ones who forecast for a living. It’s exciting to wait for the latest piece of data to come in to (we hope) shed more light on a coming storm.

That suspense doesn’t stop when we leave our workplace. In the old days, there was nothing to look at once we left the building-no computers, no Weather Channel. Nothing. Now, we can see practically every bit on information at home or on the phone ANYWHERE. Hey, isn’t this my day off? I’m at the shore visiting my father, but can’t escape.

THE LATEST
So what has changed since yesterday? The computer models are getting more consistent (even the usually inconsistent American-GFS-model). There is going to be a storm along the East Coast Wednesday, with a lot of wind. Some state or states in the East will see places smashed with snow. Coastal flooding and beach erosion will be a threat. But where?

The blocking pattern mentioned yesterday is still crucial. It will prevent the storm from tracking right up the coast, as so many Nor’easters do. The tendency is to push it to the Southeast and then East into the Atlantic. With that kind of track, only a relatively small area will feel the brunt of the storm. There will be a sharp cut-off on the north side from no snow to heavy snow.

This means that the Philadelphia area is likely to be near the northern edge of the snow and strong winds. Best chances of significant snow should be in Delaware, with the heaviest snow in the mountains somewhere from Maryland to Virginia.

Yes, it looks like we’ll be on the edge again. We were on the southern edge of the heavy snow in the New England blizzard last month. Now it’s the opposite, thanks to that blocking pattern.

“WHAT DOES THE EUROPEAN MODEL SAY?”
I’m starting to get asked that question more and more from viewers and tweeters. After hearing me talk about it on-air and in blogs ahead of Sandy, and in the controversy afterward, a lot of people know that the computers from Europe crushed the good old USA model in the Sandy forecast. CRUSHED IT! The EURO also beat the American GFS model for the New England blizzard.

And, what a surprise!-the EURO was the first to suggest a big storm somewhere along the East Coast last week. The GFS was consistently squashing it southward to the Georgia coast, and then suddenly changed its tune a couple of days ago. We are now less than 4 days from the event, so the GFS and other models tend to converge, as they are doing now.

The main European this afternoon shows a similar solution to what it showed for the past couple of days-a North Carolina/East track that would leave much of our area high and dry (but kind of windy). But the even more reliable “Ensembles” of the EURO are a bit farther north, bringing snow into at least part of our area. The Ensembles are an average of running the EURO 51 times. Any individual model run can go off on a tangent (known as “Chaos Theory”), but averaging eliminates that and scores better overall.

SO, HOW MUCH SNOW FOR MY NEIGHBORHOOD?
Since we’re on the edge, it’s too soon to tell. It sure looks like parts of Virginia (and maybe southern MD and part of NC) will get the most. But for us, the suspense continues another day-at least. Well, there goes my day off Sunday……

Glenn

A Freezing Rain Advisory will be in effect Monday morning for areas north and west, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory goes into effect from 3 a.m. until 10 a.m. for Leigh, Northampton, western Chester, western Montgomery, and Upper Bucks counties. It also includes the cities of Newton, Washington, Morristown, Flemington, Someville, Jim Thorpe, Stroudsburg, Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Honey Brook, Oxford, Collegeville, Pottstown, Chalfont, and Perkasie.

“Temperatures will be just below freezing in those areas so the rain could freeze on contact. This could create a coating of ice on untreated surfaces,” said NBC10 Meteorologist Dave Warren. “It will be warming up throughout the rush hour from south to north so Lehigh Valley-Pocono Mountains could see more ice for longer.  Once the temperature climbs above 32 (and it will) the ice will melt and most likely the advisory will be canceled in that area.”

Periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle may cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads, slow down, and use caution while driving.
