Tony Danza Tap Dances into Philly

Danza pits teachers versus students

Actor Tony Danza, will be tap dancing at Northeast High School tonight as part of the Northeast Got Talent Show. The Taxi and Who's the Boss? star will host the teachers vs. students talent showdown.

It's a homecoming of sorts for Danza, 62, who taught at the Philadelphia high school during the 2009-10 school year. The experience was documented for the A&E television series, Teach. The work deepened his respect for teaching, which he now considers one of the hardest jobs.

"Trying to impose your will so kids accept what you are trying to give them is a difficult proposition," said Danza. "I really want to support public education. Right now, you have a very low morale, job insecurity and a few unmotivated students. It's a tough job."

While visiting the NBC10 studio today, Danza summarized the year-long experience "an intensive look at what it's like to be a teacher."

Danza tells the story of that year and pays homage to his teachers in his New York Times Best Seller, "I'd Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had."

What does Danza like about Philly?

"You can hail a cab easily. The food is great. I like the mayor and Northeast High," he said.

Danza said he feels younger these days. He gave up his car and sold his beachfront California home two years ago. He moved back to New York City after 35 years in Los Angeles. "I had to come back, just needed it. LA is a very unforgiving place. New York makes you feel younger. It takes guts to live in New York City," he said.

Last year's talent show raised $30,000. Proceeds will be matched this year by Danza and local philanthropist Ron Perelman.

The Northeast Got Talent Show starts at 6 p.m. at Northeast High School, 1601 Cottman Avenue.

Doors open at 5 p.m.

The cost is $10 at the door and is open to the public.
