Forget the beach this summer, just roll over to Penn’s Landing instead.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter joined representatives of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation and others Thursday to reveal plans for the city’s first-ever outdoor roller skating rink.
"It's going to be fun in the city and that's what the summer is supposed to be all about," said Nutter.
The Blue Cross RiverRink will open Memorial Day Weekend along Penn's Landing and stay open seven days a week through the end of summer, said the DRWC.
In the middle of the rink – which will be built on the existing footprint of the winter ice skating rink – will be the landscaped Summerfest feature featuring plants and trees.
The fun will spread from the first-ever skating rink to the second-annual edition of the Spruce Street Harbor Park – featuring a flower meadow, hammocks, food, boardwalk, floating barges and expanded bicycle parking – that will open on May 22 through the end of September.
The park is free but skating will be ticketed and available for purchase online or in-person.
