Local Zoo Shows Off Baby Bison, Giraffe

The Cape May County Park & Zoo has two new additions.

The zoo on Wednesday gave the public the first look at a baby giraffe and bison that were born there this summer.

The giraffe, the first born at the zoo in 12 years, stands 6 feet tall and weighs 160 pounds.

Zoo veterinarian Alex Ernst tells The Press of Atlantic City giraffes grow fast because the only times they're susceptible to predators is when they are young. The baby giraffe had six inches of growth since Labor Day.

The zoo also welcomed a female baby bison -- the first ever born at the zoo -- late last month. The bison's parents came from Six Flags Great Adventure.

Ernst says this year has been one of the best for breeding in the zoo's 35-year history.
