On Tuesday’s episode of “The Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart took a few swipes at GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney for the “inelegant” comments he made at a closed-door fundraiser last May.

“Gov. Romney [was] at a $50,000-a-plate fundraiser talking to rich people about poor people in a manner you would imagine cartoon rich people talk about cartoon poor people,” Stewart quipped.

Just three weeks after the Republican National Convention, footage surfaced of the GOP candidate stating that 47 percent of the people who will vote for President Obama are “dependent upon government,” and “believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing.”

After examining the groups that comprise the 47 percent, which included the nation's elderly and those making less than $20,000 a year, Stewart proceeded to throw to a clip of “the real parasites: Welfare Queens.”

Only, the clip was that of Mitt Romney’s mother.

In the clip from 1962, Romney’s mother spoke about recently becoming a homeowner, and of her husband.

“He was a refugee from Mexico,” Romney’s mother said. “He was on relief, welfare relief, for the first years of his life, but this great country gave him opportunities.”

The revelation that George Romney was on welfare left the late-night host momentarily aghast.

“So according to Mitt Romney’s own logic,” Stewart reasoned, “Mitt Romney could not win the vote of his dad.”
