Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks Memoir, Politics on First “Daily Show” Appearance

“Couldn’t you just go to the future and then come back and kill that Arnold?”

Actor and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made his first appearance on “The Daily Show” Monday, where he discussed his new memoir, his time in office, and starting a think tank that focuses on global and state policy.

Host Jon Stewart started the segment by asking the question that was on everyone’s mind since the release of Schwarzenegger’s memoir, titled “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.”

“Obviously what everybody’s thinking about when they look at this is what were you thinking with ‘Jingle All the Way?’” Stewart joked.

Despite the jest, Stewart did touch on one of Schwarzenegger’s revelations in his memoir, namely his affair with the family’s longtime housekeeper, and his decision to “dredge up all this terrible stuff.”

“Couldn’t you just go to the future and then come back and kill that Arnold?” Stewart quipped, in reference to the actor’s “Terminator” franchise.

The 65-year-old actor said he was never one to dodge his problems, and the best way to get the details of the affair out in the open was through his memoir.

“My book, it’s all about a great immigrant story, about all the successes, but also in there is all my failures and the mistakes that I’ve made,” Schwarzenegger said.

The former governor also talked about his new think tank at the University of Southern California, aptly named the Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy, which aims to study “how to bring both parties together to make decisions.”

Schwarzenegger said the think tank was inspired in part by his experiences in Sacramento. Citing an example of unfunded pension liability, Schwarzenegger likened it to taking care of things in the past, rather than looking toward the future.

“I keep coming back to this idea if only someone could come back from the future,” Stewart mused.
