Katie Couric to Host ABC Talk Show

After weeks of speculation, Katie Couric has unveiled the next phase of her career.

According to a statement, Couric is set to host a syndicated talk show on ABC beginning in September 2012.

“I’m very happy to be returning to the network where I began my career as a desk assistant in 1979," said Couric. "It is tremendously exciting to have the creative freedom to develop my own show with Anne Sweeney, the Disney/ABC TV Group and Jeff [Zucker], and to contribute to such a vibrant, innovative news division."

Couric will also maintain a news presence as part of her deal. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she will anchor specials, contribute interviews, and participate in special events coverage.

Disney/ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney also released a statement welcoming Couric, who has been employed by NBC and CBS, to her new home at ABC.

“Katie Couric is one of television’s iconic figures and we are thrilled to have forged such an exciting partnership with her," said Sweeney in a statement. "We look forward to having Katie join the best News team in the business, and to working with her to create a dynamic and successful talk show franchise.”

The announcement brings to a close something of a bidding war between several networks for Couric's services post-"CBS Evening News."
