Stephen Colbert returned to his late night show Wednesday after a week-long hiatus due to his mother's death.
A choked-up Colbert opened the show with heartwarming tribute to his mother Lorna who passed away on June 12. He told the audience about her life, her faith, her childhood and how she met her husband.
"If you watch this show and you like this show, that's because of everybody who works here and I am lucky to be one of them," he said. "But when you watch the show and you also like me, that's because of my mom."
The tribute was peppered with a few humorous moments and anecdotes about her deep love for her 11 children.
“I know that it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long,” Colbert said. “But the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish, it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut.”
“Her favorite memory of prayer was a young mother tucking in her children,” he said, pausing to compose himself. “We were the light of her life, and she let us know it until the end. And that's it. Thank you for listening.”
