Singer Lester Chambers has filed a $5 million a civil suit against Hayward, Calif, in the wake of an attack at a blues festival in the city, his attorney, John Burris of Oakland, announced Monday.

Chambers had just dedicated a song to Trayvon Martin when 43-year-old Dinalynn Andrews-Potter of Barstow came on stage and attacked the 73-year-old R&B singer at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival. He suffered bruised ribs and a hip injury as a result of the attack and was forced to cancel planned performances.

Andrews-Potter was charged with felony counts of assault and elder abuse. Her attorney claims Andrews-Potter suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the beat from the song triggered the attack.

Doctors told Chambers he won’t be able to perform for at least eight months.

The suit will name the city of Hayward, the concert promoter and those in charge of concert security.
