WATCH: Will Forte Belts Out an Ode to His Beard on “Tonight”

The star of "The Last Man on Earth" joined his fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum on "Tonight" for a special tribute to his bygone facial hair.

What do you do when your beard goes away? If you're Will Forte, you grow another one. And then you sing about it.

Forte joined Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” and lamented the loss of the bushy beard he grew for his role in the TV comedy “The Last Man on Earth.” Forte even saved the beard hair—but not for himself.

“We were talking about this before: You gave your mom your beard hair?” Fallon asked.

“Mom requested the beard hair,” Forte insisted. “She does art projects based on all my things, and she said, ‘May I have your beard hair for a project I’m working on?’”

But with no art project to show for it and only a scant beard to replace the shaggy original, Forte decided to express his sorrow through music.

“This song is about the depression and sadness I went through when I had to shave my beard off,” Forte said. “It’s a tough time in every man’s life when he has to shave his beard.”

Will Forte recently shaved off his beard and he misses it very, very much.

As is his weekly habit, Fallon took some time to pen thank-you notes. On Friday’s list of recipients: Pope Francis, garage sales and the Final Four.

“Thank you, the Final Four — or as you’re now known, One Direction,” joked Fallon, riffing on the much-lamented departure of Zayn Malik from the band.

Fallon was also sure to thank Madame Tussauds for making a wax figure of him.

“Which reminds me — sure, honey, I’d love to go to your sister’s for dinner this weekend,” Fallon said, mock-guffawing as he looked at his waxen doppelgänger.

Jimmy pens thank you notes to Pope Francis, garage sales and the new wax sculptures of him at Madame Tussauds.

Adam Horovitz (better known as rapper Ad-Rock of Beastie Boys fame) stopped by “Tonight” to chat with Fallon about his acting role opposite Ben Stiller in the upcoming movie “While We’re Young.”

“I’m on a talk show!” Horovitz said gleefully, before becoming self-critically taking stock of his apparel. “I feel like I should have worn a hat,” Horovitz mused. (He later returned to the stage wearing a purple beanie.)

Jeremy Wade, the host of Animal Planet’s “River Monsters,” also visited the studio — and he brought along a few tanks full of peculiar specimens. Among them were electric catfish — which Forte ill-advisedly tried to kiss — and the decidedly bizarre hagfish, which oozed gobs of sticky slime all over Fallon’s hands.

It still remains to be seen whether those hagfish earn a thank-you note next week.
