Puerto Rico Police Arrest Reggaeton Star Don Omar

No charges had been filed, but police Lt. Aimee Alvarado told reporters that an investigation is ongoing and that officers were following up on previous reports of domestic violence.

Puerto Rico reggaeton star Don Omar was arrested Wednesday in the U.S. territory on suspicion of domestic violence.

Authorities said in a statement that 36-year-old William Omar Landron Rivera was detained early Wednesday at a house in the northern coastal town of Vega Alta. Authorities said he is suspected of threatening his 26-year-old partner.

No charges had been filed, but police Lt. Aimee Alvarado told reporters that an investigation is ongoing and that officers were following up on previous reports of domestic violence. She said Don Omar's partner was cooperating in the investigation.

One of the singer's attorneys, Edwin Prado, spoke briefly to reporters and said that Don Omar was surprised by the arrest.

"Any type of criminal allegation is detrimental to a public figure," he said.

Publicist Sujeylee Sola said she didn't have immediate comment on the arrest when reached by phone.

Some fans of Don Omar left messages of support on his Facebook page.

Don Omar won 10 awards last year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. He has also appeared in several movies, including "Fast & Furious" in 2009.
