Sherri Shepherd Talks “View” Feuds, Politics & Drinking With Joy Behar

Fans tuning in to the high-rated daytime roundtable “The View” may be looking for feuds, but co-host Sherri Shepherd said the show is meant to be educational.

“There a lot of women that watch our show who don’t know a lot about the issues and we bring that to them in a very simplistic, kind of basic way,” Sherri told Access Hollywood on Sunday as she promoted “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,” an animated film in which she voices Alex the lion’s mother. “I think we ask a lot of questions that a lot of the journalists can’t really ask — a journalist can’t look at somebody and go, ‘I think you’re lying,’ like Joy does.”

And for Sherri, who admitted on the show earlier this year that she has never voted, the learning process hasn’t just been for the audience.

“This is my first time I’ll be voting because I was in a religion where we didn’t vote,” she said. “So now… I’m learning a lot about the process, the political system, the parties.”

And as for the recent fireworks, Sherri said that though the women have engaged in intense discussions in the run-up to the election, they leave their disagreements on the set.

“It’s just we get heated when we talk,” she said. “This [is] a very intense election… we never compete because we bring different things to the table.”

While she wouldn’t reveal who she will be voting for November 4, she did say that if Barack Obama is elected, it would be a historic occasion.

“As a black woman, this is something that in my day, in my parents’ day, in my aunts and uncles and grandparents’ [day] — they never thought they would see it,” she said.

Either way, she knows where she’ll be watching the results – co-host Joy Behar’s house.
