Hollywood Cheers Calif. Gay Marriage Ruling

Tinseltown approves.

After a federal judge in San Francisco struck down a voter referendum banning gay marriage in California, a host of gay and straight celebrities took to the Internet Wednesday in support of the ruling.

"This just in: Equality won!" tweeted Ellen DeGeneres, who married actress Portia de Rossi in a Golden State ceremony two years ago, shortly before the ban took effect with Proposition 8.

De Rossi added that she was “ecstatic that Proposition 8 has been overturned” E! News reported. “This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all.”

The ruling, which will likely be appealed, also drew support from three Hiltons: Paris, Nicky -- and Perez.

"What a huge historical day for equal rights in this country!” Paris tweeted. “There shouldn't be a law on true love. :)"

Added Perez Hilton, the outspoken gay blogger: “So amazing!”

Reality stars Kim and Khloe Kardashian also weighed in with their verdict.

"I know we're still not out of the woods here and the decision will likely be appealed and taken to Supreme court but that doesn't mean today isn't a day to celebrate dolls!” Khloe Kardashian blogged, Usmagazine.com reported. “So go out and party and be merry with the people you love."

Lance Bass, Pink, Ricky Martin, Kelly Osbourne, Samantha Ronsen, Seth Meyers, Solange Knowles, Kal Penn and Christian Applegate also tweeted their approval.

Among those who blasted the move was Newt Gingrich, the conservative former Speaker of the House, People mag reported.

"Judge Walker's ruling overturning Prop 8 is an outrageous disrespect for our Constitution and for the majority of people of the United States who believe marriage is the union of husband and wife," Gingrich wrote on his website.
