All she needs is a good defense, because she's accused of being a criminal.

Singer Fiona Apple, who found success with her 1997 hit "Criminal," was arrested Wednesday in Texas for hashish possession, a jail official told NBC's TODAY.

Apple was arrested around 10 p.m. local time after a Border Patrol drug-sniffing dog found 0.010 pounds of marijuana on her tour bus, a statement from the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office said.

Apple "freely admitted that the controlled substances belong to her," the statement added, indicating that she posted a $10,000 bond and was released Thursday morning.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said marijuana possession in small amounts is a misdemeanor, but hashish possession in any quantity is a felony in Texas.

Apple had to postpone a concert in Austin that was previously scheduled for Thursday on account of the arrest.

Apple is touring on support of her acclaimed album "The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do."

Sierra Blanca has snared a handful of other celebrities in its checkpoint drug busts, among them Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg.
