Mel Gibson Unhurt After Crashing Maserati

Alcohol not suspected in actor's latest troubles

Mel Gibson crashed his luxury sports car near his home in Malibu, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The troubled actor ran his 2008 Maserati into a rocky hillside in the tony oceanside town, but was unhurt, according to officials. Police said alcohol is not suspected of being a factor in the accident, which occurred at 8:35 p.m. on Sunday.

Gibson's spokesman, Alan Nierob, told The Associated Press the actor is doing fine.

Police say Gibson was alone in the car and that alcohol was not suspected in the crash. A news release states that a friend picked up the 54-year-old actor-director from the scene.

CHP Public Information Officer Leland Tang told TMZ the actor was at a loss to explain what happened.

"Gibson told officers in the field he did not know how the car drifted out of the lane and into the hillside," Tang said. The spokesman said officers followed up by asking Gibson if he was on a cell phone and he said no. Tang adds officers also asked Gibson if he had dozed off "but he did not give a firm 'yes' or 'no'."

No further details were released and it was unclear how much damage Gibson's car sustained. The car was towed from the scene and Gibson was picked up by a pal, according to TMZ.

The "Braveheart" actor has been in the headlines lately following a bitter split with gal pal Oksana Grigorieva. The pair split in March, signing an agreement for shared custody of their 8-month-old daughter. But several recordingsof phone calls the actor allegedly made to her have since leaked, painting the actor as angry and abusive.
