Glam Slam: Michelle Obama's Go-To Gal

You’ve heard a lot ABOUT Maria Pinto — the Chicago designer who is one of Michelle Obama’s favorites, but you haven’t heard a lot FROM Maria Pinto, especially when it comes to her famous client.

“She is very empowered, but very understated. Feminine, elegant, playful and that’s just how she is,” Maria told us at a personal appearance last night at Takashimaya in New York, where she previewed her spring line and new accessories collection.

Maria, who began dressing Michelle four years ago, first became a national sensation thanks to THAT DRESS — the classic and elegant purple sheath that made headlines when Michelle wore it when Obama won the Democratic presidential nomination in June. Maria had no idea Michelle was going to wear it.

“When she came out I was like, OK. That was in the back of her closet and she just dug it out. I’m thinking I love you, Michelle,” laughs Maria. “People loved the dress and were interested where they can buy it.”

The buzz continued to build when Michelle wore Maria’s designs again at the Democratic National Convention in August and even on the cover of Newsweek. Will we see Michelle in a Maria Pinto design on Inauguration Day if Barack wins the election?

“Of course I have ideas in mind, but we haven’t discussed it. I don’t even want to jinx it. We keep everything to the universe, let the right things come. Let’s get the votes in first.”

The Maria Pinto Collection is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York and Takashimaya. We’ll have more of Shaun Robinson’s interview with Maria on Access Hollywood.
