Bicycle Shorts: Watch ‘Em, Don't Wear ‘Em

The Secret Cinema's new program celebrates bikes on film.

If there's an article of clothing uglier than the bicycle short -- those super-snug Spandex clingers favored by cycling fanatics -- we have yet to come across it. Fortunately, the ones we're talking about in this post are of the film, not fashion, variety.

On Thursday, May 28, at 8 p.m., the quirky film appreciation society Secret Cinema will host Bicycle Shorts, an evening of vintage bicycle-related cinema at the Galleries at Moore College of Art and Design. The screening is in conjunction with the Galleries' new exhibition Bicycle: People + Ideas in Motion, which "celebrates Philadelphia’s passion and commitment to the bicycle."

The short films, which are from the '50s, '60s and '70s, are all 16mm (no video for these film enthusiasts) and will be projected on a large screen,  following the opening reception for New York-based artist Ryan Humphrey's installation Fast Forward, a conceptual art piece based on the BMX bike.

Note to bike nerds - please don't wear bicycle shorts to Bicycle Shorts. The rest of the world thanks you.
