Tom Selleck Set to Return to TV In CBS Cop Drama

Tom Selleck and his bushy mustache could be returning to television.

The 65-year-old actor, is apparently near a deal to play the lead in gritty CBS cop-drama pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Can anything be more Irish-appropriate than a good cop drama?

If the deal goes through, Selleck will play the "handsome confident and highly commended" NYPD chief-of-police who lives in Brooklyn with his his father -- the ex-chief (Len Carlou). That's a lot of cops in one house, but bonus points for the fact that Selleck's mustache will be needed for the role.

The lower-key but supremely talented Donnie Wahlberg will play Selleck's son who is also a detective.

It goes without saying this is a welcome television return for a true icon -- his first since taking over the lead on NBC's "Las Vegas" on the show's final season. Television viewers might have a hard time forgetting Selleck for his memorable turn as the Dr. Richard Burke on "Friends." A classic comedic return appropriately heralded at the time.

And there was a not-so-little show called "Magnum P.I."

But either way, word of Selleck's return coming on St. Pattrick's Day  should be toasted with a pint of Guinness at the closest cop-friendly bar. Try to get some foam on your upper lip.
