“Tron: Legacy” Star Hedlund May Be “On the Road”

"Tron Legacy" has practically made Garrett Hedlund a household name months before its release and now it's got him in the running for the best role in the long awaited film adaptation of "On the Road."

"Garrett Hedlund in talks to play Dean Moriarty in the Walter Salles adaptation of Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road,' due to film this summer," tweeted Production Weekly.

Francis Ford Coppola has held the option on the book since the '70s and Salles, best known for 2004's "The Motorcycle Diaries," has been attached to the project since 2005. In 2008 he hinted at possibly setting the film in the present day.

"I am not really interested in doing a period piece that wouldn’t have a correlation with what we are living right now," Salles told CNN. "There is a strange modernity to the theme, and maybe 'On the Road' is more contemporary today than it ever was."

Sam Riley, who gave a breakout performance as Ian Curtis in the 2007 biopic "Control," was rumored last year to be up for the role of Sal Paradise, Kerouac's stand-in "On the Road."
