Damon and Knightley in Line for “Tender Is the Night”

Matt Damon and Keira Knightley are said to be up for the lead roles in a new adaptation of one of F.Scott Fitzgerald's most acclaimed novels.

David Nichols ("Starter for 10") has written a script based on "Tender Is the Night" that is being developed by 20th Century Fox, according to Pajiba.

"Tender" is set on the French Riviera in the 1920s and recounts "the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dick's harrowing demise," says the publisher's description of the book.

That synopsis is also more or less a description of F.Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's lives together. She was nuts, driving him to drink even more than he would have under his own steam. Could Damon play F.Scott to Knightley's Zelda? It's hard to see him as a dandy or her as mad-as-a-hatter flapper party girl.
