Rooney Mara Is “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo!”

The most exhaustive and public casting search in recent memory has come to a conclusion with the scion of two NFL dynasties coming out on top.

Rooney Mara has been handed the role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's adaption of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," according to Deadline. Like everyone else involved in the project, Mara is being offered a deal that would include options for the second and third installments of Stieg Larsson's bestselling "Millennium Trilogy."

Mara, a descendant of both the Rooneys and the Maras, owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants respectively, won the role after beating out a host of actress that included from Natalie Portman, Ellen Page, Carey Mulligan and Scarlett Johansson. Recent reports had Mara and Emily Browning of "Sucker Punch" as the last two finalists.

In addition to her screen test, Mara won the role in part thanks to her work with Fincher in the upcoming facebook film, "The Social Network," making her the film's second star to be handed the keys to one of Sony's movie kingdoms on the strength of their work in it -- Andrew Garfield was named the next Spider-Man in large part thanks to his work in "Social."

But before "The Social Network" comes out, you can see Mara in "the Winning Season," playing high-school basketball under the tutelage of Sam Rockwell. No, really -- watch the trailer.

Also starring in "Dragon Tattoo" the film will be Daniel Craig as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, Robin Wright as Blomkvist's sometimes lover/publisher Erika Berger and Stellan Skarsgård as Martin Vanger, one of the prime suspects in the mystery at the heart of the film.
