Daniel Craig Taking Aim at “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”

With 007's future up in the air thanks to MGM's financial woes, Daniel Craig appears to be pursuing other ventures, including one of Hollywood's most anticipated projects.

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" has already been a runaway bestseller and a highly acclaimed Swedish film (we liked it too), and now David Fincher is set to begin shooting an American version in October, with Deadline reporting that Craig is in talks to take the lead role of journalist/sleuth Mikael Blomkvist ( a name that will no doubt be tweaked to Michel Bllomquist), a role once eyed by Brad Pitt.

The film finds Bllomkvist hired to try and solve a 40-year-old disappearance, and alone the way he falls in with a 24-year-old pierced-and-tattooed hacker with a troubled past. Fincher could do great things with this story, probably even improving on the original.

Still well up in the air is the identity of the female lead, Lisbeth Salander, a role that no shortage of actresses is clamoring for, including Carey Mulligan and Natalie Portman.

Craig is currently getting set to shoot "Cowboys & Aliens," due out July 29, 2011, with director Jon Favreau, while Fincher is post-production on the Facebook movie "The Social Network," which comes out Oct. 15.
