“Carrie” Remake Seeks Kimberly Pierce to Direct

"Dirty pillows," buckets of pig's blood, the Greatest American Hero, the Coal Miner's Daughter, Tony Manero... they're gonna have a hard to making another "Carrie" with such prescient casting. But they've got a decent chance of making a far better film.

MGM is prepping a remake of the 1976 Brian De Palma film "Carrie," based on Stephen King's debut novel of the same name, and they're in talks with Kimberly Pierce ("Boys Don't Cry") to direct, reported Deadline.

"Carrie," the story of the teenage girl with telekinetic powers, a psychotic Bible-thumping mother and a school-ful of peers who drive her to madness, featured an impressive cast: Sissy Spacek in the title role; Piper Laurie as her mother; John Travolta, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt and Edie McCLurg as classmates; Betty Buckley as the gym teacher... it's the kind of movie that makes Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon so fun.

But it's also kinda campy and ridiculous in a way in which that De Palma too often specialized. In the hands of a director as mature and level-headed as Pierce, though, it could be a truly gripping nightmare of religious fervor and vengeance.

And the script is by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the veteran comic book writer, which is said to be more faithful to King's truly terrifying book. Aguirre-Sacasa is also the guy who retooled the Spider-Man musical--if he could fix that, he can do pretty much anything.
