Bullock May Have Fallen for “Gravity,” Accepted “Proposal” Director's New Offer

The hottest up-for-grabs female lead role has been given to Sandra Bullock. Maybe.

In reporting that Bullock is reuniting with  Anne Fletcher, director of "The Proposal," Deadline just mentioned as a throwaway that Warner Bros. "recently signed Bullock to team with Robert Downey Jr. in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed film "Gravity."

The film calls for a strong lead actress who will be on screen for almost all of the 2-hour-plus film about a woman struggling to get back to her child on Earth after an accident leaves her space station crippled. Robert Downey Jr. has already signed on for a secondary role.

Considering that "Gravity" casting conundrum has been a hot topic among movie obsessives, this seems like an odd way for this news to get out.

The studio has gone on its knees begging to Angelina Jolie at least twice, for a brief time it appeared that the role was down to Blake Lively vs. Scarlett Johansson, and finally it looked like it would be Natalie Portman. Other names that have been bandied about include Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Rebecca Hall and Olivia Wilde.

We were pulling for Lively for a while there, having been knocked out by her work in "The Town." Bullock at first blush is a safe choice, but one has to wonder if the same audience that pushed "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side" past the $200-million mark will rush out to see an effects-heavy movie about a woman floating in space.
