The Phillies have placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the disabled list because of inflammation in his back.
The move made Sunday is retroactive to April 28. Ruiz is hitting .226 with two homers and nine RBIs. Last year, he led the Phillies with a .302 average and .400 on-base percentage.
The Phillies will make a roster move after Sunday night's game against Atlanta to replace Ruiz.
It is expected that Joe Blanton, who is set to start Monday night, will take Ruiz's roster spot.
